Welcome to Hollin Hills!

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Civic Association of Hollin Hills (CAHH) and the residents of Hollin Hills, I want to welcome you to the neighborhood. We all hope you will make many friends here and enjoy the unique nature of this community. You will find an interesting mix of long-time residents and newer homeowners, all eager to make you feel at home.

Hollin Hills was established in 1949 and is one of the finest examples of mid-century modern architecture in the United States. Most of the homes were designed by Charles Goodman, and the influences of Mies Van Der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright are visible in the clean lines of the houses. The Goodman design was much more than just the preservation of mid-century modern architecture, but also included a desire to maintain balance with the natural landscape and foster a strong sense of community with each homeowner having an active role to play in preserving what has been handed down to each of us over the last 75 years.

Over the years, Hollin Hills has won numerous architectural awards, and has been the subject of many newspaper and magazine articles. For example, in 2013, Hollin Hills was formally listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. It is also a Virginia Landmark Historic District. 

To do our part to preserve the Hollin Hills mid-century modern architecture, our CAHH Design Review Committee (DRC) works hard to help balance individual homeowner needs with established architectural review guidelines. The volunteer architects on the committee offer free advice during the conceptual review process, conduct site visits to assist homeowners in creating seamless design options, and mentor applicants through the new Historic Overlay District (HOD)-required Fairfax County Architectural Review Board process. 

To maintain balance with our natural surrounding landscape, our robust CAHH Parks Committee organizes periodic park beautification days and recently celebrated the completion of two major stream restoration projects in Brickelmaier and Goodman Parks that will help to protect the environment. 

And finally, our CAHH enjoys an active greeter program welcoming new neighbors to the community and sponsors multiple neighborhood social events throughout the year including our Winter Potluck, 4th of July celebration, Octoberfest, and new Memorial Day observance ceremony where we honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. We are very grateful for  the dedicated group of volunteers who bring us these events and promote a strong sense of community. 

The CAHH focus in 2024–25 is on strengthening our community – creating more connected neighbor experiences and promoting volunteerism to preserve the Hollin Hills experience for the next generation. You can be a part of this! Consider reaching out to a neighbor to start a conversation or invite them over for a glass of wine. Or perhaps you could host a dinner party or organize a block party to pull neighbors together. Get involved with the association’s many volunteer opportunities -- park clean ups, organizing social events, or serving on the Board of Directors or one of the various supporting committees. Join the remarkable team of Hollin Hills volunteers to sustain the great community we all enjoy.

There is even more to look forward to in 2024 as Hollin Hills celebrates its 75^th anniversary with a number of special events, a Home & Garden Tour and a special edition of the Hollin Hills Directory. 

Enclosed are items we hope you will find useful, including:

1. Civic Association Membership Form – The Civic Association of Hollin Hills (CAHH) was formed to promote the common good and welfare of the community. We maintain seven parks, publish a monthly newsletter (The Hollin Hills Bulletin), and a telephone and information directory. The CAHH also has oversight of the Hollin Hills Pool and Pickle Ball & Tennis facilities located at the Paul Spring Road entrance. There are also community-wide CAHH-sponsored events each year including an Octoberfest, a Winter Potluck event, and a terrific Fourth of July Parade and Picnic. We also maintain the architectural integrity of the community through the oversight of the Design Review Guidelines by our Design Review Committee – commonly call “the DRC.” There is an annual fee to belong to the CAHH, and we hope you will agree that it is worth the cost. 
   
   

2. Design Review Guidelines – With few exceptions, any external construction or alteration that affects the visual appearance of any structure on your property is subject to prior review and approval by the Design Review Committee (DRC). The DRC is a resource to assist homeowners in accomplishing their goals while maintaining harmony and conformity with the design guidelines. The design review process applies to all homeowners in Hollin Hills, whether or not one chooses to join the CAHH. These guidelines can be found in the enclosed directory or on the Hollin Hills website.
   
   

3. A sample issue of the Hollin Hills Bulletin – The newsletter is distributed to CAHH members 11 months of the year by email, or for an extra fee, by mailed paper copy.
   
   

4. Two Hollin Hills bumper stickers – These overlapping “HH symbol” stickers identify cars belonging to residents. Please affix to the rear bumper of each of your cars. For additional stickers, please contact the CAHH membership director.

New members also receive a complimentary copy of the Hollin Hills Directory, which lists all residents, their contact information, a cross-reference street directory, useful local contacts, a neighborhood map streets, houses and parklands, and information about clubs.
